Abstract

The supply-side actively influences market development and the diffusion of organizational practices. Canato & Giangreco (2011) suggest four roles that consultants embody in this process: information sources, standard setters, knowledge brokers or knowledge integrators. The question of whether those four roles can still be applied to recent technological innovations is examined in the case of agile software development. A systematic literature review is carried out in two steps. First, the role of the supply-side in the diffusion of organizational practices is studied. 28 relevant journal articles are identified in management literature, mainly in the AMJ and ASQ. Second, the role of the supply-side in diffusing agile software development is investigated. 20 papers are selected from gurus in the field including Abrahamsson, Conboy, and Dingsoyr. Findings confirm the four roles of consultants and suggest a fifth role to be added to the framework. This role portraits consultants as drivers of innovation and highlights the active process of creating, evolving and driving technological innovations. It is aligned with the global market developments. Organizations ask for support in driving innovations to cope with uncertainty and establish an advantage over their competitors.
